Travel to the Sacred Valley of the Incas along the Urubamba River between Cusco and Machu Picchu |
The Sacred Valley of the Incas is an hour’s drive along the valley that hosts the Urubamba River. This valley, located between the towns of Pisac and Ollayantaytambo, is located along the river that eventually flows past Machu Picchu and down into the Amazon region. This is an area dotted with pricturesque towns, open air markets, and vast archaelogical sites. Located beneath the impressive Vilcanota mountain range, the valley is ideal for outdoor sports such as river rating, hiking, and mountain bikng. Since the Sacred Valley is a storehouse for food products for Cusco city, the valley is famous for its maize cobs and agricultural products..

Located in the town of Ollantaytambo, is the train station that connects Cusco to Aguas Caliente and Machu Picchu. This picturesque town has a selection of boutique style hotels, and some great restaurants. It is a great place to stay while on the way to Machu Picchu. Here too is a massiave archaelogical site located on the hillside overlooking the town containing such impressive structures as the Baths of the Princess, the Temple of the Sun, and the Royal Hall. Over the years, travelers have told us, that of all the places they stayed in Peru, they wish they had left at least an extra day to stay in the Sacred Valley.
