Cruise in the Galapagos Islands on the new Yacht La Pinta
Stanford Travel Systems has been informed that the refurbishments of the 48-guest Yacht La Pinta are right on schedule! Word from the naval architects at the shipyard in Peru is that they have successfully finished the heavy steel structure and are currently busy with the installation of the piping, electrical and air conditioning systems, which will be finished by mid-September.
Simultaneously, the Swedish firm in charge of the interior design and decoration, is working on every detail of the social areas and guest staterooms –modern and elegant, with a light nautical touch.Furniture and fittings are scheduled for installation beginning October 8th and the last finishing touches will be in place by the end of the year. Once La Pinta is in the ocean, and all marine safety and seamanship tests are performed, the yacht will be sailing to the Galapagos early January, for a period of training of the crew and guest service personnel in all areas, and will be ready to start operations on March 7, 2008.
La Pinta’s guests will discover every aspect of the Galapagos: adventure, discovery, environmental studies, aquatic and snorekeing activities, fun and relaxation, superb service combined with great dining. The M/V Galapagos Explorer II Announces the Addition of New Balconies -

The M/V Galapagos Explorer II has announced the addition of new balcony suites. Scheduled for dry dock renovation for the entire month of September, the Galapagos Explorer II plans to add private balconies to all of the deluxe cabins on the Erickson deck of the ship. Currently there are four Renaissance Balcony Suites onboard, and the addition of the new Deluxe Balcony Suites will bring the number of balcony suites to sixteen. Over the years, the balcony suites have been extremely popular with passengers, giving access to the outside sea air without the necessity of leaving the privacy of your own cabin. Very few ships in the Galapagos Islands, have private balconies. Currently the Galapagos Explorer II has fifty cabins, and of those, sixteen will have private balconies. Deluxe Balcony cabins will be available for use on the ship in October of 2007. The ship currently has not raised prices in 2007 / 2008 for the addition of the balconies.

Galapagos Weather in April, May, and June

Now that subtropical waters have arrived, some crucial changesl have occurred: water temperature, amount of food in the ocean, dried-up vegetation, strong winds, decrease in visibility, and an on going strengthening of the currents surrounding the islands. This means species that are land-dependant, in terms of food and nesting will modify their habits in order to survive but, more important, sea-dependant species are in need of starting their mating season…and that implies big changes in behaviour. Without any doubt, weather is the ultimate driving force of insular change. ,
At this time of year, we have already seen the first arrivals of waved albatrosses. These amazing seabirds return to Espanola in the Galapagos Islands every year to mate after roaming the broad Pacific Ocean for the remainder of the year. Blue-footed boobies have started their courtship rituals, fishes swim vigorously everywhere, penguins are very active, iguanas and turtles started to hatch, pelicans are collecting nesting material, etc. The islands are very attractive, lots of noise, and this when the real animal show is out there (April, May and June). Some hot season conditions, however, still remain, and some days will stay sunny, moderately hot, and water at subtropical levels (average of 23ºC/74ºF)). The progressive arrival of cooler waters also makes cetaceans change their migrating patterns, and end up moving from south to north (they also move along the western coast of South America). Migratory birds also escape the southern winter and will stay at tropical latitudes in search of food.
What to expect from the transition months (April, May And June):

  • Starting in the months, December through January , these transition months herald the start of the islands best weather, typically not too hot, with a light breeze that keeps air temperature cool and comfortable.
The average (max) air temperatures are 28ºC (or 83ºF). The average (min) air temperatures are 22ºC (or 72ºF). The humidity is 72%. The average sea temperature are 24ºC/ to 75ºF (generally a cooler in the western islands).
  • Vistiors will notice high levels of animal encounters and activityo with species during their reproduction periods (pelicans, albatross, seveal species of boobies, etc).
  • At this time of year, clear and cool evenings on the observation deck of the ship are a good time to gather for stargazing. Wear a light sweater or a windbreaker.
  • Sea navisgation is easy and pleasant with small rolling waves. Note that the larger ships have stabilizers that help to minimuze sea sickness. Large waves or high choppy seas are not common to the Galapagos Islands.
  • This time of year heralds sudden behavior changes in many animal species. . Naturalists will observe these from week to week, and will mention them as a great tool for environmental interpretation.

If someone asks: what is the best time to see Galápagos, the answer is “all year long”, but if someone asks when can you see the most activity in wildlife, then the answer changes to April, May and June. The weather and the wildlife of our transition months are two of the most important reasons to visit Galápagos
